County-wide stench coming from Collier landfill

NAPLES, Fla. Something stinks in Collier County.

The sulfur-smell moving throughout the county is coming from a landfill off Collier Boulevard, according to the Collier County Solid Waste Department.

There was an increase in the amount  of garbage collected after Hurricane Irma hit Southwest Florida, according to solid waste officials. The excess trash and recent rains created a strong odor.

Waste Management International is covering the landfill with dirt, mulch and shells in an effort to rid the area of the smell, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

It’s unclear when the smell will be removed completely, but crews expect the odor to be contained by Monday and will add additional materials to the landfill, according to the sheriff’s office.
