COLLIER COUNTY

Collier County deputies fear many drivers pay too much attention to their phones and not nearly enough to the road.

Collier County Sheriff’s Office came up with a sign campaign to get drivers to think before they talk or text.

“Our community outreach department came up with some ideas on how do we engage the community and ask them for their help in driving more safely,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “And that’s why they came up with the slogans.”

According to nonprofit National Safety Council, driving while on a cell phone leads to 1.6 million crashes annually. And one-in-four accidents in the U.S. is caused by texting and driving.

One of the news road signs says, “Who you gonna call? Nobody. You’re driving.”

Rambosk said he sees positive results from CCSO’s campaign.

“As I drive around the community and I go by a sign, I see the rest of the vehicles either slowing down or getting off their phones, doing what we hoped they would do,’ Rambosk said.
