Hurricane Dorian is expected to continue to gain strength as it moves closer toward Florida. All of Southwest Florida is still within Dorian’s forecast cone as of now.
Right now, Dorian is expected to make landfall on Monday as a Category 4 hurricane. The rate at which the storm is moving is expected to slow down which will mean more rain when it makes its way to land. There is still disagreement within our forecast models the exact impact to Southwest Florida, but the WINK News Weather Authority team is working hard to monitor and forecast this storm as it approaches the east coast.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, Hurricane Dorian is gradually moving northwestward with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, making it a Category 2 hurricane. The center is currently about 330 miles east of the southeastern Bahamas. The current location is at 23.3°N 68.4°W, and the storm is moving northwest at 12 miles per hour with minimum pressure of 997 mb.
A Hurricane Warning has been discontinued for Vieques and Culebra, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The government of Antigua has also discontinued its Hurricane Warning for the British Virgin Islands. That warning would mean hurricane conditions are expected within 6-12 hours. A Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are no longer in effect for Puerto Rico, which would have meant that hurricane conditions are possible within 6-12 hours or tropical storm conditions are expected within 6-12 hours.
Currently, all coastal watches and warnings have been discontinued, but more are expected.
Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Florida to counties can prepare for potential impacts.
